UAE Invests in AI Leadership: Over 1,000 Apply for National Experts Program

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is aggressively building its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities from within, and the demand is evident. More than 1,000 Emirati professionals applied to the AI track of the UAE National Experts Programme (NEP-AI) in less than two months, demonstrating strong interest in the nation’s AI ambitions. This surge in applications underscores the UAE’s commitment to developing local leadership in a critical, rapidly evolving field.

Program Details and Structure

The NEP-AI program, launched on January 29, 2026, and closing on March 24, 2026, is designed to cultivate the next generation of Emirati AI leaders. The eight-month program – running from May to December 2026 – is structured around six core tracks:

  • AI Infrastructure and Hardware: Focusing on the foundational elements of AI technology.
  • AI Models and Application: Developing expertise in AI algorithms and their practical use.
  • AI Productization and Entrepreneurship: Turning AI research into viable commercial products.
  • Sovereign AI and National Capability: Building self-reliance in AI development.
  • Human-AI Leadership and Foresight: Preparing leaders to navigate the ethical and strategic implications of AI.
  • Applied AI Domains: Applying AI solutions to specific national priority sectors.

Participants will engage in a hybrid learning model, combining monthly in-person workshops, panel discussions, site visits, and international study trips.

Mentorship and Practical Application

The program emphasizes mentorship at two levels: strategic guidance from ministers, CEOs, and senior leaders; and technical direction from AI specialists for capstone projects.

Each participant will develop a capstone project tied to their organization, aiming for real-world solutions to national challenges. International exposure will connect participants with leading AI institutions globally.

Why This Matters: Beyond Policy to Execution

The UAE’s early investment in AI education sets a precedent for government-led talent development. While many nations debate AI regulation, the UAE prioritized building domestic expertise aligned with its National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031.

“One thousand applications for a highly selective program signals that Emirati professionals aren’t just aware of the nation’s AI goals; they want to drive them forward.”

This proactive approach strengthens digital sovereignty and positions the UAE as a leader in emerging technologies. As global competition for AI talent intensifies, the UAE’s internal capacity-building strategy is a key differentiator.

Final selections are expected in May 2026. The program builds on the UAE National Experts Programme, which began in 2019 and formally introduced the AI track in October 2025.

The UAE’s approach to AI is not just about technology, it’s about people: investing in the leaders who will shape its future.
