The Take It Down Act is live.
No more excuses from Big Tech.
Starting Tuesday, the full enforcement kicks in. If someone posts your intimate photos online — real ones, AI fakes, doesn’t matter — they have to pull them. Social media giants, messaging apps, video hosts. Everyone. It’s the law now.
Signed in 2025. Driven by the deepfake epidemic. But it covers the old-fashioned nonconsensual leaks too. The FTC runs the show here, but they aren’t the janitors. You still have to do the lifting first. Report it on the site. Use the button they are supposed to provide. If they ignore you? Then you call in the Feds.
The FTC lets you report stuff happening to you or your kids. You can even help others, if they give you permission.
And sure. Call the police. Or the FBI tip line. It helps.
How to actually make it disappear
Step one? Use the tools.
Most platforms finally have them. See the three dots? Click there. Look for “nonconsensual intimate media.” It’s usually there now because it has to be.
Here is the deal. Forty-eight hours. That is the clock. Once you submit a valid request, they must take it down within two days.
What if they don’t?
Break the tools.
If the site refuses, or the button doesn’t work, file a complaint with the FTC directly. Online. The agency looks for patterns. If one platform keeps messing up, they get hammered. It’s simple leverage.
Did the photo come back? Submit the request again. Rinse. Repeat.
One caveat though.
If it involves minors? That’s a whole different animal. That is CSAM. Child Sexual Abuse Material. Stricter rules apply. Don’t just go through the platform’s generic flow. Report it to the NCMEC Cyber Tipline immediately. They have their own takedown service specifically for this. Use it.
Why wait for someone else to protect them?
The law forces the platform to act, not just the government.
The FTC didn’t comment much when asked about it. They pointed to a press release. Cold. Bureaucratic. Standard.
The tool is yours. The clock is ticking. Will the sites listen? We will see.
Probably.
