Anthropic’s Claude Now Accesses Your Files: New AI Agent Launches in Beta

3

Anthropic has unveiled Claude Cowork, a new feature allowing its AI to directly interact with files on a user’s computer. Currently limited to MacOS users with a \$100/month Claude Max subscription, the tool enables AI-powered organization, modification, and creation of projects based on local data.

What Claude Cowork Does

The core function of Cowork is simple: users grant Claude access to a folder, and then instruct the AI via chat to manage its contents. This includes renaming files according to custom rules, sorting documents, and even extracting data to create spreadsheets or other reports.

For example, a user with a directory of receipts could ask Claude to organize them and automatically generate an expense spreadsheet. The AI can also link to external applications via “connectors,” allowing it to create presentations or other projects directly from the data. Cowork also integrates with a Chrome extension, granting access to browser-based tasks.

The Rise of “Agentic AI”

Anthropic’s move reflects a broader trend in AI development: the shift towards “agentic” capabilities. Rather than merely responding to prompts, these AIs can act on behalf of the user, automating tasks like booking travel, compiling reports, or even placing orders. ChatGPT Agent and Gemini Agent already offer similar functionality.

According to Felix Rieseberg of Anthropic, users were already repurposing Claude Code (the AI’s coding tool) for everyday tasks like taxes and file management. Cowork is designed to streamline this process.

Security Concerns and Limitations

Anthropic stresses that Claude cannot alter files without explicit access. However, the feature is in a research preview (beta), meaning unintended consequences are possible. The company advises using Cowork only with non-sensitive data.

More seriously, the AI remains vulnerable to “prompt-injection” attacks, where malicious code embedded in websites could potentially hijack Claude and grant unauthorized access to local files. While Anthropic claims to have built defenses, a successful attack could expose sensitive information.

The emergence of AI agents like Claude Cowork raises important questions about data security and trust. As these tools become more powerful, the risk of unintended actions or malicious exploitation will only increase.

In conclusion, Anthropic’s Claude Cowork represents a significant step towards more integrated and automated AI assistance. However, its current limitations and potential security risks mean users should proceed with caution.
