Over 200,000 Iniu power banks are being recalled after reports of overheating and fires, including incidents causing minor burns and over $380,000 in property damage. The recall affects a specific model sold exclusively on Amazon USA between August 2021 and April 2022.
Identifying the Recalled Model
The recalled model is the Iniu 10,000mAh power bank (BI-B41), available in black and blue. Crucially, only units with serial numbers ending in 000G21, 000H21, 000I21, or 000L21 are affected. If your power bank is red, orange, or was purchased outside of Amazon USA, it is not part of this recall. Similarly, serial numbers ending in 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, or 25 are safe.
What to Do if You Own a Recalled Unit
If you own one of the affected units, immediately stop using it. Store the power bank in a cool, dry place until further instructions. Iniu requires customers to submit a claim online with proof of purchase (between Aug. 1, 2021, and April 30, 2022), a photo of the charger, and a six-digit unique code found on the back of the device.
The company has not yet clarified how customers obtain this unique code, but you should submit a claim to receive further instructions.
Once approved, Iniu will issue a refund. Do not dispose of the power bank in regular trash or recycling, as it contains hazardous lithium-ion batteries. Instead, take it to a municipal Household Hazardous Waste collection center.
Why This Matters
This recall highlights the risks associated with low-cost electronics, especially those containing lithium-ion batteries. Fires from defective power banks can cause serious injury and significant property damage, as demonstrated by the $380,000 in losses reported to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. The incident underscores the importance of product safety standards and consumer vigilance when purchasing portable charging devices.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has already received 15 reports of overheating, including 11 fires, resulting in three minor burn injuries.
If you suspect your power bank may be affected, verify the serial number immediately and follow the recall instructions to prevent further incidents.
